Welcome to the Cancer Wise Leeds legacy resource page

This page includes a range of resources designed to support GP practices and other health professionals to improve cancer screening awareness and participation.  The resources have been created by a number of organisations across Leeds and were collated by the Cancer Wise Leeds team.

Cancer Wise Leeds was a three-year programme which aimed to improve participation in the three national cancer screening programmes for bowel, breast and cervical cancer and raise awareness of cancer signs, symptoms and risk factors.  Coordinators worked with communities and stakeholders within Primary Care Networks across Leeds, to develop tailored support and strategies to add value to existing cancer screening and awareness interventions. The programme focused on narrowing the gap between different communities in Leeds to help reduce health inequalities.

Cancer Wise Leeds was funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research and delivered in partnership with Leeds City Council and Leeds Cancer Programme, between April 2019 and September 2022.  Coordinators based within Leeds GP Confederation supported the delivery of the programme.

For ease of use this page is broken down into categories but we recommend looking through the full range of resources below.  We hope you find it useful.

Cervical screening

Cervical screening checks the health of the cervix.  It is not a test for cancer, but a test that helps prevent cancer, by detecting changes to the cells of the cervix that may develop into cancer in the future.  Cervical screening is estimated to save 5,000 lives each year in the UK.

Targeting communities to encourage cancer screening

Cancer screening participation varies depending on multiple demographic and geographical factors. Identifying groups which have lower screening participation and creating specific targeted work to increase screening participation helps to reduce the health inequalities some community groups face and increase overall screening rates.
